Pigeons are a common sight in urban areas, and while they may seem harmless, they can cause a lot of damage if they are not properly controlled. Pigeon droppings are not only unsightly, but they can carry dangerous diseases as well. In addition, pigeons can cause damage to buildings, statues, and other structures. For these reasons, pigeon control is important for maintaining a clean and safe environment. Pigeon control methods: There are several methods that can be used to control pigeons. One effective method is the use of spikes or netting to prevent pigeons from roosting on buildings or other structures. Another method is the use of visual deterrents, such as reflective surfaces or predator decoys. In addition, sonic devices that emit ultrasonic or loud noises can also be used to deter pigeons. Benefits of pigeon control: Implementing effective pigeon control measures can provide several benefits. For one, it can help prevent damage to buildings and other structures. It can also reduce the amount of unsightly pigeon droppings, which can be a health hazard. Furthermore, controlling the pigeon population can help prevent the spread of diseases that can be carried by pigeons, such as salmonellosis and histoplasmosis. Choosing a pigeon control service: When choosing a pigeon control service, it’s important to look for a company that has experience and expertise in the field. A reputable service will assess the problem and provide a customized solution that is tailored to the specific needs of a property. In addition, the service should use humane methods to control the pigeon population. Conclusion: In conclusion, pigeon control is important for maintaining a clean and safe environment, as well as reducing the risk of damage to buildings and the spread of diseases. By choosing a reputable pigeon control service, property owners can ensure that their premises are kept free of pigeons and the damage they can cause.
Bird mites are common in feral pigeons. Mites feed on the blood of chicks and once the chicks ‘fly the coup’ the mite infestation will leave the nest site in search of food. For a small insect they travel at remarkable speeds, spreading through ceilings in no time. They drop down light fittings, cracks windows etc. VERY UNPLEASANT! click here to see some footage of mites.
Of course Pigeons aren’t the only bird problem encountered in our region. (Brisbane, Sunshine Coast & Caboolture)
Indian miner birds would be the second most common cause of problems. Introduced from South East Asia these pest birds are another example of the folly of using introduced animals to control pest species. Brought to Queensland by can farmers (good work boys….not!) they’ve established themselves right up and down the east coast of Australia and are considered a serious pest species. Not to be confused with the native,The Noisy Miner. Indian miners are scavengers and eat everything from garbage to eggs and hatchling chicks of other native species. They are aggressive in behaviour and growing in numbers. They occupy the nesting sites, feeding grounds and airways of our native birds and attack, displace and sometimes kill our native birds but also small mammals and bats too.
- The solution
- Locate nesting site and access point
- Treat for mites.
- Remove nesting material, chicks, eggs.
- Close access point or install mechanical barriers. ie. Bird netting, spikes, wire mesh.
